Cannonballs found at Waterloo

An estimated Forty Two thousand cannonballs of all sizes were fired at Waterloo. By far the most used projectile was the roundshot, a solid iron ball capable of terrible destruction. The roundshot relied on a smashing effect but at Waterloo the ground was so sodden that few would have bounced and most buried themselves deep in the soft ground. Cannonball finds are not common at Waterloo as most are still lying deep underground. The majority of those that have been found now lie in museums. Of all the projectiles the most coveted by collectors is the 12pdr.

French 6pdr cannonball

Description

French 6pdr Cannonball one of 4 found in 1979 by a french metal detectorist and cannonball collector.Purchased from that collection by myself in 2003 when it was put up for auction. These were found in the area between La Haie Sainte and Hougoumont exact location map will be provided with the certificate of provenance.

Cannonballs are now extremely rare finds and can only be found with deep scan metal detectors. On the day of the battle rain had made the ground very muddy and a lot of the estimated 42,000 cannonballs fired that day ended up deep in the soil.

Condition amongst find from different areas of the battlefield varies a great deal with some items exhibiting lots of corrosion and some very little.

In overall superb condition as these have been shotblasted to remove all corrosion. Typical french rough casting of the period. I have 2 for sale from that batch found in 1979. One will be supplied.

French 4pdr cannonball Plancenoit

Description

Here we have for sale one of those items that most historians claim was never used at Waterloo. It is known that the smallest calibre used on the Battlefield that day was 6pdr used by both French and British, Most historians disagree that 4pdrs or Grape shot was ever used during the battle but here we have one 4pdr found dug from the very same battlefield near Plancenoit. Perhaps one battery did open fire,Perhaps it fell from a surplus ammunition cart that question will probably never be answered. I have seen many items dug from the field and some are regimentally marked to units that were never thought to be there. That for me is the pleasure of these artifacts you just never know what will turn up next.

French 4pdr Cannonball found North West of Plancenoit. This one was found by a Belgian Collector and Metal Detectorist between 1980 and 2005.  exact location map will be provided with the certificate of provenance.

French 12pdr deformed cannonball

French 12pdr Cannonball one of 4 found in 1979 by a french metal detectorist and cannonball collector. Incredibly this one is very slightly flattened indicating that at some stage of it's flight it struck something very hard either a wall, cannon or suchlike. These were found in the area between La Haie Sainte and Hougoumont exact location map will be provided with the certificate of provenance.

Condition amongst finds from different areas of the battlefield varies a great deal with some items exhibiting lots of corrosion and some very little.

In overall good condition as this one has been treated to remove all corrosion. 12pdrs are a very rare find and this is one of only 4 that i have in the collection. One should remember that in 1815 the French used a different weights and measures system to Us and their Pound weighed more than ours. Therefore a French 12 pdr could end up weighing a fair bit more than our current 12lb weight.

This is a fantastic collectors piece and very unusual.
