Musket Balls found at Waterloo

An estimated Three and a half million musket balls were fired at Waterloo. The majority found on the battlefield are French and British with Prussian balls found around Plancenoit. Prussian balls were the largest followed by the British Brown Bess balls and finally the smallest were the French Charleville balls. Below you will find a selection from all areas of the battlefield.

One of a kind.

Condition and shape will vary but nearly all of these are almost flattened and misshapen The terrain in and around Plancenoit was completely different from the rest of the battlefield and much of the later fighting took place in and around buildings.

One French Charleville musket ball

French musket balls found in 1980 by a French collector at and around La Haie Sainte

In excellent condition

Pictured are a few from that batch found in 1980 you will receive one.

An estimated 3.5 million musket balls were fired at Waterloo but it is rare to have the location recorded. We have several batches up for sale and each one is identified as coming from a specific area of the field. Dates of finds are included where known.

 

One of a kind. Condition and shape will vary but nearly all of these are almost perfectly round. The ground was very soft that day after continuous rain and has preserved many of these balls perfectly. The thick Clay soil found in many of the areas on the battlefield contains little oxygen and helps to reduce oxidation.

Rare British Brown Bess Musket Balls from the Fichermont area on the Waterloo battlefield. Fichermont was on the Allied Left Flank.

Found on the battlefield by a British Collector between 2000-2004.

Dating from the action there on 18th June 1815 we have just a few of these.
